Scammers posing as CRA agents
Have you ever received a text message from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) asking you to fill in an online form?
It’s a scam, don’t do anything. Do not respond. Keep in mind that the CRA never sends text messages. The CRA never sends any links, never sets up a meeting with you in a public place to take a payment, and never asks for your social insurance number unless YOU call the CRA first.
Now if you do receive a call, how can you make sure the caller is a CRA agent? Ask for the agent’s name, agent ID and phone number. Then, tell the caller that you want to verify their identity first. You can then call the CRA’s 1-800 number to verify. Or, you may simply let your accountant handle it for you!
